What is breast enlargement or breast augmentation?

Breast enlargement/augmentation is also known as mammoplasty enlargement or augmentation mammoplasty. The procedure is done by the insertion of breast implants either under the breasts or under the breast and chest muscle. Breast enlargement is done for cosmetic reasons, reconstruction after mastectomy or correction of genetic deformities.

What are breast implants?

By definition, prosthesis pertains to an artificial device to replace a missing body part. In the context of breast augmentation, the “missing” body part refers to the size of the breasts. Breast implants are a kind of prosthesis that are made of elastic silicone that are filled with either silicone gel or salt water used to enlarge the breast size.

What are the preferred breast implants for me?

There are different types of breast implants to choose from that vary in sizes, material and consistency. In addition, they differ in projections for different body types to meet the specific aesthetic goals of a patient. There are silicone gel filled breast implants, saline filled breast implants and polypropylene breast implants.
Silicone gel filled breast implants (sometimes referred to as the silicone gummy bear breast implants) are made up of a silicone elastomer shell that are pre-filled with a cohesive, gelatin-like substance – silicone gel. The silicone gel has a thick and sticky consistency that somewhat mimics human fat, which is a large component of women’s breasts, giving a natural look and feel of the breast tissue.
Saline filled breast implants, on the other hand, also consist of silicone shell that is filled with salt water instead of silicone gel. Unlike the silicone gel filled breast implants, saline implants are not compressible and give a more firm impression.
Polypropylene breast implants are known as string breast implants that are now banned in the European Union and the United States due to the many medical complications it has caused.
It is best to consult with a cosmetic surgeon for preferences on breast implants and advice on which is best for you.

What is breast lift?

A breast lift or mastopexy is a cosmetic surgical procedure that elevates the breasts on the chest wall and firms the breasts by the removal of excess skin. The process also includes tightening the area around the tissue to reshape the breasts.

Will I be able to breastfeed after breast plastic surgery?

Yes. However, there are factors that differ a woman who had breast plastic surgery’s breastfeeding experience from another. Some of the factors include the type of surgery performed and the insertion of the implants, to name a couple. These may inhibit the production and delivery of the breast milk by disrupting the milk ducts that transports milk from the mammary gland to the nipple.
It is best that you discuss with your cosmetic surgeon any plans of breastfeeding in the future so he or she may consider performing the type of surgery and insertion, among other things, that will cause the least possible problems that may occur during breastfeeding.

What is breast reduction?

Breast reduction or reduction mammoplasty is a procedure that reduces the size of the breasts. It is done by the removal of excess skin, fat and glandular tissue to achieve the breast size that is proportionate to the your body and relieve you of the discomforts that you encounter everyday due to having large-sized breasts.

How can I be sure I will like the results?

The best way to ensure that you get your desired results is to discuss everything you wish to be done with your cosmetic surgeon. Talk to him or her about every minute detail and every concern you may have about your surgery.
At Breast Enlargement New York, these discussions are done easier with the help of the state-of-the-art computer generated imagery that allows you to illustrate to your cosmetic surgeon your desired look.

Are the results long-lasting? How long?

The results vary from one breast plastic surgical procedure to another, but they are all usually long-lasting. Breast implants, for example, are not permanent. They generally last between 7 and 10 years, and will need replacements by then.
Breast plastic surgery results can change over time due to aging, weight fluctuations, gravity and other hormonal factors.

How much does breast plastic surgery cost?

The cost varies depending on the specific breast plastic surgery to be performed. In addition to that, there are other factors that could add up such as the cosmetic surgeon’s professional fee, hospital or clinic costs, anesthesia fees, cost of implants (for breast augmentation), medication, post-surgery essentials (such as special bras, gauze, etc.) and medical tests.
Breast Enlargement New York, however, guarantees reasonable prices for every breast plastic surgical procedure. Feel free to contact us today for a quote.

How to prepare for my surgery?

The preparation for surgery also varies on the type of surgery you are about to have. Generally, you must be physically healthy, must be a non-smoker or must abstain from smoking several weeks before the surgery and must have a stable weight.
The preparation must also include your full awareness of the procedure that is about to be performed on you – the process, the risks, the possible results and the post-surgery guidelines.

How long does it take to recover?

The length of recovery time is also dependent on the performed breast plastic surgery. Usually, patients are discharged from the hospital or clinic on the same day that the surgery is performed. Recovery from breast augmentation or breast reduction, for instance, lasts for less than a week. Incision scars are permanent, but are expected to properly heal a little more than a week.

Is the recovery painful?

You are advised to observe yourself for 24 to 48 hours after the procedure is performed as well as to limit your mobility or physical activities for a few days. During the recovery period, you will experience soreness and some swelling in the breast area.
If pain persists or escalates to an intolerable level, inform your cosmetic surgeon immediately.

What are the risks involved?

There are various risks involved in each specific breast plastic surgery. Below are the risks that generally applies to most, if not all, of the procedures:
  • Permanent scarring
  • Excessive bleeding
  • Possible infection
  • Improper healing
  • Excessive fluid accumulation
  • Irregular breast shape and contour
  • Breast asymmetry
  • Loss of skin or tissue
  • Damage to the breasts, tissues and mammary glands that will hinder future breastfeeding
  • Chronic intolerable pains
  • Allergies from the materials used and/or substances administered during operation such as anesthesia, surgical glue, adhesives, sutures, ointments and more
  • Pulmonary and cardiac complications

Which questions should I ask my Plastic Surgeon?

You should not stop yourself from asking whatever questions you may have to your plastic surgeon before the surgery. Here are some things you can ask answers for:
  • Ask about the cosmetic surgeon’s reputation and affiliations. - Are you a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons? Are you certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery?
  • Ask about the cosmetic surgeon’s background. – Are you trained in plastic surgery? Is plastic surgery your expertise? How long have you been performing plastic surgery? Do you have before-and-after photos of the surgeries you have performed?
  • Ask if the cosmetic surgeon has hospital privileges and if so, at which hospitals?
  • Ask about the hospital or clinic’s accreditation and licenses.
  • Ask about your qualification for the procedure. – Am I a good candidate?
  • Ask about the details of the procedure. – How and where will the procedure be performed? What surgical techniques will be used?
  • Ask what you can personally do to ensure the best results of the operation.
  • Ask about post-operation questions. – How long will my recovery take? What kind of assistance will I be possibly needing after my surgery? For breast augmentation procedures: How many times to I need to change implants in my lifetime.
  • Ask about possible problems and solutions. – What are the risks involved in the operation? What are the complications that may arise? How are these problems addressed? What are my options if I am dissatisfied with the results?
